A Real Friend

Normally, this blog is reserved for the topics that most interest us, namely music, Judaism/Jews, Chicago, the environment, NBC's The Office, or any combination thereof. However, I'm going to digress here for a moment to discuss a phenomenon that has probably been a part of your daily routine for a number of years. Yet, I was not truly exposed to it until today. I'm talking of course about Facebook.

Thanks to Miriam, Stereo Sinai has had a fan page for some time now, but somehow I managed to hold off on joining the cult of Facebook for several years. That is until last week when I was finally convinced by a friend (as in a real-life friend I actually spoke with in person) that it would be a good way to network and get in touch with people I hadn't had any contact with in a long time. Even though I have only had my Facebook page for a few short hours, it seems as though my friend was very correct. Other arguments I'd heard were just not very convincing. "Everyone else has one." "It will be good for business." I even had one very shocked person ask, "How do you exist?" I didn't want to be part of a world where you had to be like everyone else in order to exist.

But then I finally caved in. I realized that I truly do miss many of those folks I hadn't kept in touch with in so long, and that those really close friends I have would now have yet another way to stay in touch with me. And when you get right down to it, that's what's really important.

That, and you know, whatever's good for business.
